SR-22
An SR-22 is simply a piece of paper that your insurance company files with the DMV to prove that you have a payment or your policy cancels, the DMV will be notified and they will suspend your license again. You don't own. You may also buy an SR-22. This is called a non-owners policy.
If you have an insurance policy, your current company must give you an SR-22 filing, and they must provide coverage at no additional cost to you until the end of your present term. (you can keep your insurance policy, and just buy an SR-22to cover your license, your present company may never find out about your DUI!)

There are many ways to file an SR-22 with the DMV and some do not require you to cancel your policy. The fee to file an SR-22 varies by insurance company but usually ranges from $15 - $40 and is paid when issued.
You must have an SR-22 issued on your license for a period of three years and a month after your conviction date.
Don't bother getting an SR-22 until you have completed your suspension period and are ready to get your drivers license reinstated.
